The Brexit negotiator hinted that any deregulatory move risked Britain falling too far below European standards and being stripped of its zero-tariff and zero-quota arrangement in the trade deal. Mr Barnier singled out the UK for emergency use of a bee-killing pesticide and a proposed reform of workers’ rights laws. Speaking at an European Business Summit event, the Frenchman said: “We have some reason to be vigilant.

“I hope once again that competition, respecting the sovereignty of the UK and the autonomy of the EU, will remain free and fair and I recommend that.”
