The cross-party letter referred to the alleged threat to the continuity of existing supplies of goods to supermarkets across the six counties once the Northern Ireland Protocol kicks in. The party leaders’ warning refers to the problem the need for food checks will have on the province after December 31.
Foods coming into Northern Ireland from Great Britain will be subject to checks and controls from January 1.
Arlene Foster and Michelle O’Neill wrote: “It is hard to imagine a more fundamental aspect of everyday life than the purchase of daily food supplies.
“Hence we would ask you to recognise how important it is that the current consideration of the detail of how the Protocol will be applied takes our unique context into account.”
