Anthony Mangnall, the Conservative MP for Totnes, has spoken out after Mr Wakeford dramatically decided to cross over to join Labour MPs in the Commons on Wednesday. Mr Mangnall had once worked with Mr Wakeford on a parliamentary bill to make by-elections compulsory for an elected politician who switched sides. He described Mr Wakeford position now to not hold a by-election in South Bury as “rank hypocrisy!”

GB New’s Isobel Oakshott asked Mr Mangnall: “Christian Wakeforf supporting that bill of yours, was that just a kind of procedural thing? Everybody put their names to it or did he actually really express genuine backing?

Mr Mangnall told GB News: “He was emphatic about supporting it because he recognised the value and the promise that we give to our constituents to represent them to also stand up for people who come out and knock on doors with us.

“He was absolutely emphatic about supporting that bill when I put it through and it passed by three votes, and unfortunately didn’t get it’s second reading, but we are going to have another look at it again and Jacob Rees-Mogg has made the point of saying that this should come forward and a couple of other cabinet ministers have done so as well.

“But you know, as one of the people who was much more loudly in support of this, and I think he was in the chamber with me at the time, I was pretty surprised to see him do what he’s done.”

He continued: “He’s a total hypocrite, you know, I think if you’re going to do this, and I think it’s a very brave thing to go and try and switch sides and especially to join the Labour Party and then to start saying all the positive things he’s saying about them, despite all the other negative things he’s been saying about them over the last two years.

“It is rank hypocrisy, and I’m sorry that he hasn’t decided to call the by-election because he should.”

Mr Mangnall added: “I think you know, one of the things that we do have to remember in politics is that and while I don’t like what he’s done, and I would never do it myself, and I think it is despicable, and I think it flies in the face of everything, I believe in politics, people are human, and he has made his decision.

“I don’t see any point in rubbing salt into his wounds, but I do think he owes it to his constituents for them to have a say on this matter.”

Christian Wakeford mispronounces Sir Keir Starmer's name

It comes after a furious radio caller slammed Mr Wakeford’s decision to cross over to the Labour Party.

Fiona, who lives in the constituency of Bury North which neighbours Mr Wakeford’s seat told Jeremy Kyle on talkRADIO “I think it’s the worst mistake he’s ever made.”

She said: “I think it’s disgusting.

“I think he’s lower than a snake’s belly.

“It’s cowardly, he has done it purely for his own political career.

“But I think it’s the worst mistake he’s ever made because everybody in Bury is just going mad. I think it’s disgusting.”

Jeremy Kyle added: “And from what I know and you live in Bury, he didn’t talk to his constituency party, he just decided when he looked at the fact that his boundary is going to change and he’s only got the majority of 411 that he jumped ship, make a big idiot of himself and I think it’s going to backfire on him and Keir Starmer, do you?”

“I do absolutely,” replied Fiona.
