The Mayor for London was blasted for “going missing” by his Conservative opponent as the pair clashed over Mr Khan’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Shaun Bailey criticised Labour’s Mayor for not showing “effective” leadership at the start of the crisis. He also argued Londoners had not been represented effectively with Sadiq Khan “nowhere to be seen” when transport staff were “crying out” for PPE.

Mr Bailey told the BBC London debate: “What Londoners want is a mayor who is effective.

“One of the things that happened at the beginning of the pandemic period, the mayor went missing. At our time of need.

“I remember writing to him, begging him to give TfL staff protective clothing, he was nowhere to be found. We need a representative in London, we need someone who takes responsibility.”
