Political commentators Richard Power Sayeed and Dominique Samuels clashed during a tense TalkRADIO debate about Extinction Rebellion and the public perception of the climate group. But this atmosphere changed when Mr Sayeed made a link between Extinction Rebellion and the women’s rights group the Suffragettes stating many vilified the group during the beginning of the 1900s. Mr Sayeed said people in the future would essentially respect Extinction Rebellion for the cause they are pushing with Ms Samuels seen cringing at the suggestion.

Speaking on TalkRADIO, Mr Sayeed and Ms Samuels went head-to-head on host Rob Rinder’s show about Extinction Rebellion following the protests in London.

Mr Sayeed said to look at the Suffragettes years ago who were “campaigning on similar existential issues” and the public perception of them.

He defended the Suffragettes breaking the law to get heard and how the movement is now respected in contemporary society.

The former Labour advisor said Extinction Rebellion will eventually be seen as the same due to the cause they are promoting as Ms Samuels winced at the comparison.

But he clarified he does not support the group but supported the cause.

Mr Rinder invited Ms Samuels to share her thoughts on the debate as he saw her “shaking her head” at the link.

She told the show: “I mean, firstly to compare what Extinction Rebellion are doing to the Suffragette movement is absolutely ridiculous and quite laughable…”

Mr Sayeed could be heard yelling in the background “What are you talking about! The world is on fire” adding he was “so angry” towards Ms Samuels.

She replied: “Richard you’re foaming at the mouth and you look really angry and I think you need to calm down.

“You are a prime example of what the issue is because when anyone tries to address the ridiculous points you make you freak out.

“17 percent of the UK population have a positive view of Extinction Rebellion!”

According to the most recent YouGov poll, around 19 percent of respondents have a positive view of Extinction Rebellion.

Mr Sayeed reiterated he did not support Extinction Rebellion but backed the cause they were promoting.

He was then asked why the focus was not on China to which he said most of the UK’s production has been exported to the country and the “super-rich” are responsible.

Extinction Rebellion has been protesting across London for most of the week with over 200 arrests made so far.

Oxford and Picadilly Circus were some of the few places targetted by the climate group who have been gluing and attaching themselves via chains to buildings and vehicles.

A large pink table was built in Seven Dials to make a point to investment firms to “come to the table” and negotiate the future of the world.

The protests are expected to continue throughout next week with the City of London seeing more focus from the activists.
