A business owner showed up to work after scooping the equivalent of £22 million in a lottery.

The man, from Sydney in Australia, entered the wrong phone number and wasn’t able to claim his Powerball prize for five days.

He bought the ticket from a newsagents for the draw on Thursday, April 22, and later heard lottery officials were still trying to get in touch.

The winner was then able to claim the huge sum of 40 million Australian dollars [£22.41m].

He said: “I didn’t know I’d won. I checked my ticket on the weekend. I’d heard there was another Powerball winner they were trying to contact.

“I even said to my friend, ‘we’ll never win, only old people win’.

“They said you’d been ringing but I didn’t get a call. There was a digit wrong on my mobile number.”

He is now looking forward to splashing the cash.

The man added: “I always thought a couple of million dollars would be good, but this is seven or eight times that amount.

“I’ve still turned up to work this week. I'll pay off the mortgage and go from there.”

Thuy Nguyen, the owner of the Dublin Street Newsagency where the ticket was bought, was delighted to be involved.

He said: “This is the first time we’ve ever sold a division one winning entry and it’s a $40 million prize.

“We’ve been waiting to make one of our customers a division one winner and it’s great we now have.”

Another punter from Campbelltown in New South Wales scooped the same amount in The Lott game.

Earlier this month, a Brit won £100,000 on the National Lottery just days after his mum tragically died of cancer.

Simon Wilcock, 44, from Helston in Cornwall, made the fortune on the £100k Jackpot Yellow Instant Win Game.

The dad of two, who owns Phoenix Signs, was watching TV when he decided to try his luck.

He said: “I have an order in which I play the games in, as they show up on my phone screen.

“I don’t usually play £100,000 Jackpot Yellow, but for some reason I did this time, and I’m so glad that I went for it.

“Maybe it was a sign from above, as I certainly feel that Mum was looking down on me and I know she would be over the moon, just like my dad is.”
