British dog grooming school inundated with applications after lockdown

A new dog grooming academy says it has been overwhelmed with applicants.

Bone Idol, in Brighton, East Sussex, has set up a training centre in nearby Hove, providing formal iPet qualifications in dog grooming and training.

Their iPet syllabus – which stands for International Pet Education and Training – has seen a slew of potential candidates sign up with the business suggesting many people are changing their careers due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Academy director Helen Kirby said: "You can learn how to groom your own dog in one day or complete a Level 3 diploma in dog grooming & salon management in 33 days, plus everything in between.

"We have already received a high number of applicants for our courses and can't wait to open our doors.

"Coronavirus has made people really consider their futures, and many people are looking to start their own businesses.

“If that new start is in dog grooming, our courses can give you the high-quality skills that you need to really make a success of it.”

The Bone Idol Academy is a Training Provider Centre in its own right and is overseen by qualifications and exams regulator Ofqual.

  • Giant dog café opening soon – and it boasts indoor beach and pup adoption services

There are also a range of shorter courses available for dog owners, including dog first aid, and grooming your own dog.

Bone Idol boss Scott Learmouth said: “Coronavirus and the lockdown was a real time for reflection, and people are starting to think ‘what can I do to enjoy my working life?’ ”

“We have been overwhelmed with the response since we opened and we are so glad that many people looking to start their own grooming businesses are looking to get the right skills before they start, as we believe they should.”

A recent study by business skills provider PeopleCert found that 39% of people in the UK are considering changing career following lockdown ‘career epiphanies.
