Death row inmate, John Grant 'vomited on himself' before lifting his head up a minute before losing consciousness in a horror execution, according to reports.

Grant, who killed a prison worker has been executed tonight despite huge concerns over the safety of the procedure used to kill him.

John Marion Grant, 60, was executed by lethal injection at 4:21pm local time (10:21pm UK time) on Thursday at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.

It was the first death sentence carried out in more than six years in the American state of Oklahoma due to heated public debate over lethal injections, following three botched executions in 2014 and 2015.

Reuters reports that a witness also saw Grant convulsing during tonight's execution.

John Marion Grant was sentenced to death in 1998 for the killing of Gay Carter, a member of staff at the prison where he was serving time for robbery, whom he stabbed 16 times.

For his last meal today he requested two bacon cheeseburgers with onions, tomatoes, pickles, lettuce and mustard, half a gallon of Neapolitan ice cream, a large bag of barbeque flavoured crisps, a large package of Nutter Butter sandwich cookies, and a 2-litre bottle of Mr. Pibb, according to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

Grant has a lengthy criminal history, dating back to when he was 11 years old, having spent time in the juvenile system before going to the adult corrections system.

Millions of people had signed a petition calling for his death sentence to be revoked.

After Grant was killed tonight, his Sarah Jernigan claimed he had tried harder to atone and understand his actions "more than any other client I have worked with."
