Depressed ex-bodybuilder turns life around saving neglected and abandoned dogs
A depressed ex-bodybuilder who was down in the dumps after his lover left him turned his life around saving abused, neglected and abandoned chihuahuas.
Bobby Humphreys, 48, from Maryland in the US, felt completely despaired after his ex-wife left him for another man last New Year’s Eve.
Broken-hearted Bobby sought help from friends and family, but says one person in particular stood out for her invaluable support through the dark times.
Bobby’s best friend and guardian angel Connie not only gave him and shoulder to lean on, but led him to his saving grace when she asked him to return a favour.
Speaking of his best friend, Bobby said: “She was moving in between homes in her new place and she could not keep her son’s dog, Lady.
"She asked me if I would mind temporarily keeping her until she could find another place. Of course, I accepted. Lady is a special case who did not like people very much, especially then.
“I was warned about her at first and she was placed in a kennel in my house when I was at work one day.
“When I got home it took me about 15 minutes of watching this poor girl sitting in the kennel before I decided that I was going to let her out.
“Lady came with me and literally made me whole again with unconditional love and affection.”
An eagle-eyed Connie could not believe Bobby had let the pup out of her kennel when she later walked in on the two.
Left with the feeling that Lady had saved his life, Bobby decided he wanted his own.
But it was in his quest to find a new pup that he realised just how badly treated the tiny dogs are.

Bobby, who found his first chihuahua, Kira, on Craigslist, went on to open a sanctuary called Big Guy, Little World, which has rescued over 50 pups to date.
The dog-fanatic, who now spends more than 12 hours a day with his furry friends, believes he has found a sense of purpose in his new occupation.
He added: “I went from doing this myself with only the help of Connie to officially having five full-time staff members including two that live there full-time.
“I have to be honest with you, I was very nervous about this.

“I was concerned about what people would think. Would they think I am the male version of the crazy cat lady?
“Would they think I’ve gone completely insane?
“I can tell you this, almost every single friend of mine, not even just the close ones and every single family member as well, have been nothing but supportive across the board of me doing this.
“To see my mother’s face when she told me when she was so proud of what I was doing is a moment I’ll cherish always.”
