Dramatic footage has shown armed police storming Nice’s Notre-Dame de l’assomption Basilica after a suspected terror attack in the area left at least three people dead.

Nice-Matin, a local news outlet, has reported a person of around 70 years old was beheaded inside the church and another died in the building.

Several others are injured in what the city’s mayor suspects is a terrorist attack.

A video posted to social media, which appears to be filmed from a building overlooking the church, shows four policemen rushing up the stairs and through the doors.

They appear to be reaching for their firearms as they enter the cathedral and ambulance sirens can be heard in the background as the scenes unfold.

The city's mayor, Christian Estrosi, tweeted: "I am on site with the [police] who arrested the perpetrator of the attack.

"I confirm that everything suggests a terrorist attack in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Nice."

He went on to say: “We have two people killed inside the church … and a third person who was in a bar facing the church where she had taken refuge. Enough is enough … we have to remove this Islamo-fascism from our territory.”

The assailant was arrested after the Thursday morning attack and taken to a nearby hospital after being injured during his arrest, a police official said.

He was believed to be acting alone, the official added.

Mr Estrosi told reporters the attacker kept shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest) even after he had been arrested by police.

Police have cordoned off the area and urged people to stay away.

A spokesman also told reporters: "Both victims were beheaded."

"Both victims were beheaded," a police spokesman said.

Locals reported hearing explosions during the incident, which happened just after 9am on Thursday, October 29.

But the police service reassured people in a tweet, saying: "The detonations you hear are those caused by the services of @PoliceNationale, Do not panic, the situation is under control -Respect the security perimeter – Do not use Notre Dame sector.
