Hungary’s ruling right-wing nationalist Fidesz party resigned from the conservative European People’s Party today, according to a letter posted on Twitter by Fidesz Vice Chairwoman Katalin Novak. The EPP suspended Fidesz over its perceived backslide on democratic values in 2019 and Fidesz had already quit the EPP’s group in the European Parliament earlier this month.

A note addressed to the Secretary General said: “I hereby notify the Presidency of the European People’s Party that Fidesz- Hungarian Civic Union no longer wishes to maintain its membership in the European People’s Party, thus resigns according to Article 9 of the Statutes.”
