Harry and Meghan were astonished Canadians didnt pay for security – expert

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were left stunned when they were told that Canada would not be paying for their security while living in the country, a royal expert has claimed.

The Sussexes stepped back from their royal duties in March 2020. They had been spending intermittent periods in Canada prior to the split – including Christmas 2019.

But, in February 2020, Canadian authorities revealed they would stop providing security for the couple, something that royal author Tom Quinn suggests stunned them.

Speaking on Channel 5 documentary Meghan at 40, he said: “When they went to Canada, they discovered the Canadians didn't want to pay for their security, and the Duchy of Lancaster didn't want to pay while they were there. I think they were both upset and astonished.

“When Meghan and Harry gave the impression that they were hard done by, this produced a lot of negative press coverage because they have a great deal of money.

“They had to repay several million for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage and I don't think they expected that.”

Since moving to the US, the couple have conducted several high-profile interviews shedding light on their time within the Royal Family as well as securing lucrative media deals.

It was in one of those interviews – the bombshell sit-down with Oprah Winfrey – that Harry claimed to have been cut off financially by the Royal Family.

“We didn’t have a plan,” he said. The Netflix deal was suggested by somebody else [when] my family literally cut me off financially, and I had to afford security for us.”

But royal biographer Richard Fitzwilliams was left confused by the claims.

He toldExpress.co.ukthat it was Harry and Meghan who had asked for their financial independence.

“I was very surprised that Harry implied the reason they had taken the Netflix and Spotify deals was because they had been cut off financially,” said Richard.

“I always understood that they wished to make their own way financially and I always thought they wanted to be completely self-sufficient and this is part of a media drive.”
