Inmate escapes jail through sewer pipe in real-life Shawshank Redemption plot
A daring drug dealer facing the death penalty escaped by tunnelling through a jail sewer pipe in a real-life Shawshank Redemption plot.
Cai Changpan, 37, facing execution after being found guilty of methamphetamine smuggling, dug a hole from his cell into waste pipes and out onto the street.
The elaborate scheme is remarkably reminiscent of the iconic scene in the legendary 1994 film which sees character Andy Dufresne escape from the Shawshank State Penitentiary via a sewage-filled pipe he spent 19 years digging.
Red – played by Morgan Freeman – utters the memorable line: "Andy crawled to freedom through 500 yards of s*** – smelling foulness I can't even imagine."
Amazingly, the Chinese drug dealer had successfully escaped jail once before using a similar method.
But the resourceful con managed to outsmart prison staff once again in another ambitious scheme.
He had been planning his route to freedom for six months, revealed a fellow prisoner at the jail in the Tangerang area of Jakarta, Indonesia.
The convict secretly swiped tools from a building class inmates were allowed to attend. And then waited until the changing of the guards to carry out his audacious plan, Jakarta police spokesman Yusri Yunus revealed.
He was facing execution after being sentenced in 2017 for trafficking 135kg of crystal methamphetamine, Indonesian news website detik.com said.
Police stunned to find loaded gun hidden up man's bum during strip search
A police investigation found 70kg of meth hidden in chicken coop cleaner equipment.
Changpan had previously broken out of a Jakarta police detention centre in 2017 by breaking a hole in a bathroom wall.
Police have now placed the elusive jailmate on their most wanted list after he fled on September 14.
Changpan is not the first prisoner to make a life-or-death dash for freedom.
In 2015 two US inmates used power tools to slice through the steel walls of their cells and even trolled guards with a note which said: "Have a nice day!"
Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34 crawled along tunnels to escape the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.
The two men were both serving life sentences for murder. Matt was shot dead less than three weeks later and Sweat was caught around the same time and sent back to jail.
And infamous serial killer Ted Bundy who slaughtered 30 women escaped jail twice. The first time he jumped from a law library window and the second time he starved himself until he was skinny enough to fit through a hole in his prison cell roof.
