A popular restaurant built on a converted paddle steamer has been likened to the Titanic after it slowly started sinking into a lake with baffled customers and staff still onboard.

Miller and Carter steakhouse, at Lakeside shopping centre in Essex, was forced to evacuate everyone at the location after it began to precariously lean into the water.

Staff have since vowed to “rectify” the odd situation, although it remains unclear exactly why the establishment started to sink, reports Essex Live.

Thankfully, everyone in the restaurant managed to get off safely with one bemused onlooker joking it was "going down like the Titanic".

Pictures showed the slanted establishment partially submerged with water passing the front fence.

One customer fumed online: “Just when you thought Xmas couldn’t get any more disappointing… we had our Xmas dinner booked at Miller & Carter Lakeside, WHICH HAS SUNK!!!!”

The restaurant was forced to tell people to stop ringing their phone and advised them it to try and move any bookings to their Langdon Hills location instead.

They wrote on Facebook: "We are aware of the current situation at Miller and Carter, Lakeside. We will answer as many calls as we can to accommodate you.

“Please do not try and call Miller and Carter Lakeside at this time as they are working hard to try and rectify this situation. Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience".

Whilst a spokesperson for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed: "We were informed of the incident, but as no one was onboard (everyone was safely evacuated) there was no life risks and therefore we were not required to attend.

“The incident has been left in the care of the site owners."
