Meghan Markle to brand Royals ‘liars’ during Philip’s third weekend in hospital

The Queen is set to spend her third weekend away from her husband as Prince Harry and Meghan accuse Buckingham Palace of 'spreading lies'.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 99, is expected to remain in hospital when the Sussexes' tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey airs in the US.

Prince Philip will undergo "treatment, rest and recuperation" after undergoing major heart surgery this week.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: "The Duke of Edinburgh yesterday [on Wednesday] underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition at St Bartholomew's Hospital.

"His Royal Highness will remain in hospital for treatment, rest and recuperation for a number of days."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have faced criticism over the timing of the interview as they enjoy a lucrative life in the US after quitting the UK and Royal Family last March.

A trailer showed the pregnant former Suits actress, 39, accusing Buckingham Palace of "perpetuating falsehoods" about her and Harry.

In the clip, Meghan said: "I don't know how they could expect that after all of this time we would still just be silent if there is an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.

"And, if that comes with risk of losing things, there is a lot that has been lost already."

The two-hour CBS special remained set to air in the US as Prince Philip entered his 18th day away from her Majesty on Friday. ITV has won the UK rights to broadcast it on UK tellys on Monday after a reported £1m bidding war.

A source told the Mail Online: "There are a lot of people who are going to talk about this until the programme airs, but the programming and all the rest of it is ultimately up to CBS, we're not involved in that side of things.

"As it stands, I don't think there is any intention from the programme maker to change its air date."

Harry's grandfather underwent the major surgery at Britain's top heart hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London on Wednesday.

He was transferred there on Monday from the private King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone where he was being treated for an infection.

Philip's daughter-in-law Camilla revealed the Duke was "slightly improving" and that everyone in the Royal Family was "keeping our fingers crossed" while visiting a vaccination centre in Croydon on Thursday.

It has been business as usual for the Queen this week, who held a telephone audience on Thursday with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Wigston.

Her Majesty heard about the RAF's "commitment to supporting the nation's response to the pandemic", Buckingham Palace said.
