The former first lady of the United States is one of the world’s most recognisable faces and alongside her husband helped change the face of US politics. While by Barack’s side she saw her partner rise to be the first black president in US history and she has also become a multimillionaire in her own right thanks to her critically acclaimed memoir ‘Becoming’. But despite enjoying a happy union, the 56-year-old claimed she and Barack had their “tough times” as she spoke about their marriage on her new show The Michelle Obama Podcast.
Each week Michelle invites a different guest on, with the sixth edition seeing the ex-FLOTUS discuss relationships with US chat show host Conan O’Brien.
When quizzed about what her relationship with Barack was like, Michelle didn’t hold back – openly acknowledging that at times she “wanted to push him out of the window”.
She explained: “And I say that, because it’s like you’ve got to know the feelings will be intense. But that doesn’t mean you quit.
“And these periods can last a long time. They can last years.
“But we don’t talk about that, so young couples, they face these challenges, and they’re ready to give up because they think they’re broken.
“And, I just want to say, look, if that breaks a marriage, then Barack and I have been broken off and on, throughout our marriage, but we have a very strong marriage.
“And if I had given up on it, if I had walked away from it, in those tough times, then I would’ve missed all the beauty that was there as well.”
The chat centred around people’s readiness to commit to marriage, with Conan claiming he was not ready until his late-30s to marry his now-wife Liza Powell.

Barack, Michelle said, had a similar view and was driven to not knowing about marriage as a result of his parents’ divorce and grandparents’ “rocky marriage”.
But Michelle said she “always knew” she would marry Barack, with the ultimate test of their strength coming as Barack attempted to become US President back in 2008.
And she gave an important piece of advice to listeners who were hoping to maintain their own long relationships – don’t use dating apps.

She added: “Do you want to build something with someone?
“There’s no magic way to make that happen, except getting the basics of finding somebody, being honest about wanting to be with them, to date them seriously, to plan on making a commitment, to date them, seeing where it goes, and then making it happen.
“You can’t Tinder your way into a long term relationship.”
