Moment man awkwardly gatecrashes secret EU defence ministers’ meeting
An embarrassing video shows a laughing journalist "hacking" his way into a top-secret EU meeting when one of the Twitter accounts of a minister showed a picture of his pin-code by mistake.
Daniel Verlaan, a Dutch reporter from RTL Nieuws, looks stunned when he realises he has managed to gatecrash his way into the conference so easily.
He covers his mouth in shock, before laughing and giving an enthusiastic wave.
"Who are you?" someone asks.
"Hi I'm fine, how are you?" Verlaan answers.
While some defence ministers can't stop themselves from laughing, he is also given a stern telling off.
Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy chief and president of the council, tells him: "You know that you have been jumping into a secret conference?"
Verlaan says: "Yes, yes. I'm sorry. I'm a journalist from the Netherlands.
"I'm sorry for interrupting your conference. I'll be leaving here."
Sounding unimpressed, Borrell replies: "You know it's a criminal offence?
"You'd better sign off quickly before the police arrive, huh."
In its own report of the incident, RTL Nieuws said Verlaan got access to the meeting when the Twitter account of Dutch defence minister Ank Bijleveld "briefly contained a photo with the login address and part of the pin code".
RTL News guessed the pin code after a few attempts, because "five of the six digits of the pin code were visible in the photo".
The meeting with cancelled after the security breach and a Dutch Defense spokesperson said tweeting the photo with the pin code was a "stupid mistake".
"This shows how careful you should be careful when sending a picture of a meeting," they added.
