Mum adopts ‘real-life Garfield’ cat that loves to stand on his hind legs

An adopted cat has become an internet sensation thanks to the unusual way it likes to chill.

The feline, called Leroy, was taken in after his previous terminally-ill owner was tragically forced to give him up.

It soon became clear that the cat had a unique quality – he loved to stand on his hind legs and look around.

The daughter of Leroy’s owner captured the hilarious pose on camera and shared it to TikTok, where she joked he was like a “real-life Garfield”.

“He does this thing where he stands up on his hind legs and just looks around and it’s really cute and I’m so obsessed with it so look at this,” she says.

The footage shows Leroy casually perching just like a human with his adorable paws hanging down.

He doesn’t seem to have a care in the world as he looks around at his surroundings.

Unsurprisingly, the video has proven hugely popular online, amazing a whopping 2.9 million views since being posted to TikTok on February 5.

“How can people not like cats when they do things like this?” one amazed viewer asked.

Another commenter joked: “You are witnessing the evolution of cats. Eventually they will walk upright and it won’t be so strange. For now, it is strange and funny.”

Others pointed out cats can often sit like that when they are declawed, to try and ease the pain.

But the uploader, @primitive_guy, said Leroy had not had the operation.

In a second video, the user explained the backstory of how her mum adopted the cat.

“His previous owner who got him as a kitten was terminally ill and very sadly had to re-home Leroy for that reason,” she said.

“About a year ago our family cat Hilary died which was a pretty big loss – that was my mum’s companion for almost 20 years.

“She wasn’t planning on getting another cat after that but when she read about Leroy she was like ‘I gotta get this cat’.

“So she adopted him a couple months ago and he was really sad and confused at first but now he’s adjusting, he’s happy and safe and loving his new home.

“And I’m really glad he’s part of our family now. Leroy and my mum really deserve each other.”
