Prince William and Kate Middleton’s ‘secret marriage pact’ after breakups

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a secret relationship pact after they went through a rocky period, according to reports.

Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement a decade ago to the delight of royal fans and the monarchy.

Now a happy family-of-five, The Express reported that they had cemented their relationship with a secret “marriage pact” after a break up.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl wrote in her book Kate: The Future Queen, that the Cambridges made the pact soon after they got back together.

According to reports, the couple broke up twice during their ten-year romance.

William reportedly suffered cold feet after feeling pressured into marrying the Duchess in 2007.

He is said to have left Kate heartbroken at her family home in Berkshire, and nearly broke them up for good.

But they rekindled their love affair before the Prince was pictured partying with a mystery blonde in a Fulham nightclub.

The pair soon jetted to the island of Desroches, in the Seychelles, to spend some quality time together.

After dating for years without a proposal, Katie claims the mum-of-three was looking for some clarification from Prince William.

Nicholl claims that it was here that William told Kate he was in it for the long term.

She said: “There on the paradise island, William promised Kate that he was in the relationship for the long term.

“For the very first time, they talked seriously about marriage, and with the ocean before them and beneath the night sky, they made a pact to marry.”

As part of their pact, they reportedly agreed to wait to tie the knot until the Prince had finished with his army training.

Once they did finally announce their engagement to the world, Kate said the pair had gone through good times and bad.

The Duchess said in an interview: "I think if you go out with someone for quite a long time, you get to know each other very, very well.

"You go through the good times, you go through the bad times."

She added how people "can come out stronger and learn things about yourself".

He said: “I'd been planning it for a while but as any guy knows, it takes a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going.”

During press interviews during their engagement period, the couple revealed they were looking forward to having a family.

William had said: “I think we'll take it one step at a time. We'll sort of get over the marriage first and then maybe look at the kids. But obviously we want a family, so we'll have to start thinking about that."

Kate also spoke about how important her own family is to her, before adding: "And I hope we will be able to have a happy family ourselves."

Their hopes came true and the pair are now parents to Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and two-year-old Prince Louis.

The couple had met at the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 2001, and their romance was confirmed in 2003.

They tied the knot at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011, and just over 18 months later they were expecting their first child, Prince George.
