Two cars collided on a “dangerous” road in Sicily, Italy, in a crash that killed seven people last night. Maria Pia Giambona, the latest victim confirmed dead, was aboard an Alfa 156 driven by her husband Vincenzo Cipponeri, 44, who died instantly.
The car collided head-on with a Fiat Doblò in which two families from Carini, in the Palermo area were travelling: Matteo Cataldo, 70, his wife Maria Grazia Ficarra, 67, their son Danilo Cataldo, 44, and another couple, Matteo Schiera, 72 years old, and his wife Anna Rosa Romancino, 69 years old, cousins of the Cataldo spouses. The first two victims were instead of Erice.
The impact between the two cars was extremely violent; the fire brigade teams, which arrived from Trapani and Alcamo, worked for a long time to extract the bodies of the people who were on board.
On the spot, the carabinieri and the Polstrada agents carried out the usual surveys to ascertain the responsibilities and causes of the accident, almost certainly linked to the high speed.
The Prosecutor of Trapani has opened an investigation, the investigations have been delegated to the Carabinieri of Alcamo and Custonaci. The judiciary ordered an autopsy on the drivers of the two vehicles that collided, Vincenzo Cipponeri and Danilo Cataldo. The bodies of the other victims were returned to their families.
The area where the accident occurred is one of the most famous in the Trapani area for its crystalline sea and the beach of San Vito lo Capo. Also for this reason the provincial road 16 is very busy, especially on weekends and in the presence of beautiful days like today, by tourists and day-trippers. As almost certainly in the case of the victims who came from Palermo.
The accident in Sicily is the most serious of many others that also occurred this weekend on Italian roads. Four cars, carrying twelve people, were involved in a collision this morning on the A8 Milan-Varese motorway, between Legnano and the junction with the A9.
One person died and four others were injured, one of them in particularly serious condition. The causes are yet to be established.
Three other people died in accidents driving their motorcycles. In the province of Bari, on the state road 84 that connects Adelfia to Rutigliano, a 54-year-old man collided, perhaps for a risky overtaking, against a car, losing his life.
And in Manduria, in the province of Taranto, a 42-year-old soldier died last night after losing control of his motorbike. He was 23 years old the motorcyclist who lost his life today in Malvagna, in the province of Messina, after hitting the guard rail.
A 65-year-old cyclist is the victim of an investment in Faedis, in the province of Udine. A car hit him and threw him into a ditch; the driver, after stopping and then driving off, gave himself up a few hours later. It is a 31-year-old man, who said he left the scene of the accident because he panicked.
The 35-year-old woman of Peruvian origin was walking along the San Vitale provincial road in the territory of Medicina, in the province of Bologna, who was run over and killed by a car during the night.
