Skydiving instructor dies plummeting thousands of feet after parachute fault

A skydiving instructor has died after a parachute fault sent him spiralling to his death, authorities have confirmed.

The tragic teacher, whose identity has not yet been revealed, is said to have suffered severe injuries and was rushed to hospital after plummeting to the ground during a tandem jump from thousands of feet in the air on February 19.

The instructor’s female student at Skydive Houston in Waller, Texas, was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive, the company said.

So far, it is believed that the instructors primary and secondary parachutes 'failed to open' sending both the student and instructor spiralling down to the ground.

Waller County Sheriff Troy Guidry told CNN: "The instructor’s parachute during the jump “failed to open". The primary and secondary [parachutes] both just kind of swirled down."

An eyewitness, named Alex Arias said: "He let off his primary and then the secondary chute like opened halfway up so he didn’t fall like a straight fall, he was like 50% chute, like a corkscrew."

Alex claims the man was unconscious after the fall, while the female student was alert and calling for help.

In a statement, Skydive Houston said: "Skydive Houston, along with the greater skydiving community at large, is deeply saddened by the loss of our tandem instructor and friend.

“Our sincerest condolences are extended to his friends and family. We continue to pray for a full recovery for the injured tandem student.”

They also added that jumps are "currently suspended pending both local law enforcement and [Federal Aviation Administration] investigations."

According to the United States Parachute Association, tandem skydiving accidents are “extremely rare" as there has only been one student fatality per 500,000 jumps in the last 10 years.

It is not clear what caused the incident at this time.
