Surgeons hand shooting victims family plastic bag containing one of his kidneys

A man who was rushed to hospital after being shot had one of his kidneys removed by surgeons – and hospital staff then put it in a plastic bag and handed it over to his family.

Jefferson Oliveira Bispo, 21, underwent surgery at a hospital in Salvador, a city in the Bahia region of Brazil, last week.

He had been shot in the Itinga neighbourhood after apparently being approached by armed men.

He was taken to hospital and immediately given surgery to stop the bleeding.

During the operation, doctors contacted his girlfriend Andreza and told her they had “a piece from her boyfriend”, reports Diario do Nordeste.

When she arrived at the hospital, Andreza was given the bag.

“After that, [the doctor] came to say it was his kidney. Until then, we didn't know any of this and only found out after the visit that it was the kidney,” Andreza said.

According to the hospital, the kidney was handed over to the family so they could take it for a biopsy, as there was not a facility on site for one to be carried out. The regional health authority said the family was given details of where they could get a biopsy.

However, this week the authorities reversed their decision, accepting that there’d been a gap in the provision of care. The kidney has now been returned to the hospital.

Jefferson's father, Luciano Bispo, who was also in the hospital at the time, said: “It's a very complicated situation. We are appalled by a situation like this.

“I wanted an answer from the hospital, because I've never seen such a thing.”

Luciano said he tried to file a complaint with cops, but he claims he didn’t complete the procedure because he was “mistreated and embarrassed” by the police.
