Teacher, 28, killed by coronavirus two weeks after going back to school
A young teacher died of coronavirus just two weeks after returning to school after lockdown.
Demetria Bannister taught Third Grade at Windsor Elementary School in Columbia, South Carolina in the US.
She had returned to school before her pupils to begin preparing for the new academic year, and was last at the institution on August 28 with colleagues undergoing last minute prep work.
Tragically, she fell ill before term began in earnest on August 31, and was diagnosed last Friday with Covid-19.
She died on Monday, September 7.
Ms Bannister, who also led the choir at Windsor Elementary School in Columbia, had been leading online classes during the pandemic.
The school has confirmed that a deep clean is being carried out on the premises following her diagnosis.
Contact tracers are also trying to track down any colleagues the young teacher came into contact with.
Baron Davis, superintendent for the Richland 2 district which includes Ms Bannister's school, paid a poignant tribute to her.
He said: "While gone from us too soon, Ms Bannister’s legacy lives on through the lives of the students she taught in her five years as a dedicated education."
