Terrified couple discover cobra in toilet after mistaking hissing for ‘wind’

A couple woken up in the middle of the night by the "howling wind" were horrified to find a highly-venomous spitting cobra slithering in their toilet.

They immediately called for help while the serpent continued to creep through their home in Durban, South Africa.

A video of the dramatic incident, recorded on November 14, shows snake expert Jason Arnold catching the Mozambique spitting cobra (Naja mossambica) from under the couple's fridge after a lengthy stand-off.

In the clip, the snake flicks out its tongue out as Jason slowly approaches with a special tool.

The snake catcher grabs the snake around the head and, with his other hand, slowly pulls out its body from beneath the fridge.

He then warns that the snake can still spit, so to keep well out of its range.

Jason said he received a call from the frightened couple after they were awoken by hissing sounds and bangs coming from the bathroom.

Initially thinking it was the howling wind, the couple eventually got out of bed to investigate, only to discover the highly-venomous animal crawling among their bathroom products.

The couple sealed the bathroom off with a towel barrier, but the 1.2 meter-long cobra managed to escape and roamed the house while they called several snake catchers in the area.

By the time Jason had arrived from two previous callouts, the deadly snake was lurking under the couple's fridge.

The snake catcher later said that he will release the cobra into the wild on a nice warm day this week.

Jason added that the Mozambique spitting cobra's name is slightly misleading as they are not only found in Mozambique but are also common in neighbouring countries like South Africa.

They are also found in Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
