Forecasters warned of wind and cold in the North, followed by milder weather and sunshine in the South. Today, the mercury will peak at 12C (53F) in the South, before dipping to highs of around 7C on Friday.
In the North, it will be 9C, with 6C expected by Thursday. But overnight, it will dip to below freezing in the North by the middle of the week, with lows of -3C in some parts.
The Weather Outlook predicts a chilly Thursday, with wintry showers in central and northern areas.
From Friday, the North can expect showers, while the rest of the UK should be dry and sunny.
The River Wye in Gloucestershire and Herefordshire, the Trent in Derbyshire and the Severn in Shropshire are among at least 10 areas on flood alert in coming days.
