Wetherspoon customer films ‘filthy’ tables stacked with dirty plates and glasses

A Wetherspoon customer was left horrified when he visited a pub to find apparently "filthy" tables filled with dirty plates and glasses.

The punter filmed the outdoor tables at The Lord High Constable, in Gloucester Docks, on August 2 and captured piles of rubbish around the seating areas.

In the clip, the customer pans to show a notice stating "dedicated employees will be deployed, at all times to clean and sanitise the pub" as part of their measures to safeguard against Covid-19.

But no staff appear to be present as he walks through the empty tables.

Most of the tables are left with half-filled drinks, dirty plates, untouched sauces, and napkins.

The man, who doesn't wish to be named, said: "I thought I must be in the wrong place. The pub was filthy as can be seen from the video.

"Beside the obvious fact that the pub is not being cleaned as advertised, the seagulls are encouraged by the mess to see what they can scavenge.

"They picked through the plates and bowls and I saw a gull knock a glass to the floor which then shattered and left a hazard. The birds themselves are a nuisance as their frenetic squabbling to get the best pickings puts people at risk of being hurt."

The footage was sent to Gloucestershire Live after the man read an earlier report of a customer complaining to the same pub on August 8, in which a spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon said two staff members disinfect the pub throughout the day.

The woman who complained in the incident visited the pub during peak hours said the hygiene was "awful" and there were no contact tracing details taken.

She said: "None of the staff even carried a spray or a cloth. Towards the kitchen area there were around fifty dirty glasses stacked up.

"We really regret going there and hope we remain healthy following our visit."

Regarding the August 8 incident, a JD Wetherspoon spokesman said: "The pub has two staff members who clean/disinfect the pub throughout the day, including all the ‘touch points’ throughout the premises on the hour, every hour.

"This is in addition to the cleaners who come to the pub each morning.

"With regards to contact tracing, when we reopened our pubs on July 4, we introduced a paper-based system, asking customers to give their contact details which were put in a ‘ballot-box’ at each pub and kept for 21 days.

"No system is risk-free, there is always the risk of human error, and it is not possible to verify the information that the customer provides. However, in the main, we are confident that the system is working well.

“It is not mandatory for pubs to take contact details, but Wetherspoon is doing so in all of its pubs."

Daily Star Online has put the new allegations from the video taken on August 2 to JD Wetherspoon for comment.
