Woman’s body found on Newcastle riverbank by market trader setting up stall

The body of a woman was found on a river bank on Sunday morning.

A market trader was setting up at the weekly Quayside market in Newcastle when they made the grim discovery and reported it to the authorities.

The body was seen on the bank of the River Tyne, close to the city's law courts, at roughly 8am today, reports the Chronicle Live.

Police are now working to identify the woman and inform her next of kin.

An investigation into the death is currently underway.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 8am police received a report from a member of the public of concern for a body on the bank of the River Tyne near the Law Courts.

"Emergency services attended and found the body of a woman.

"Enquiries into the circumstances around the woman’s death are ongoing as well as enquiries to identify her and trace the next of kin.”

The Quayside market is still operating as normal despite the large presence of the emergency services.

Pictures from the scene show several police vehicles, two fire engines and an ambulance.

Underwater search teams were also at the scene this morning.

No further details have been released by police at this stage.
