Dustin Walters, 25, was rushed to hospital on December 5 after he was reportedly shot by his toddler, Mars, before dying as a result of his injuries.

Police officers responded to reports of a shooting at his home in Savannah, Georgia, USA, where they found Walters suffering from a gunshot wound.

A statement from the Savannah Police Department said that he was shot “accidentally” by a child under the age of two.

They have not confirmed the victim’s relationship with the child, but Walters has a one-year-old son with his wife, Tori.

The statement added: "The preliminary investigation determined that Walters was wounded when a toddler, who was just under two years of age, found and fired the handgun, striking Walters.”

Investigators have not revealed the type of gun that was used but confirmed that the victim’s family members were present in the house when the gunshot was fired.

It is not clear if any said relatives face any criminal charges in relation to the shooting.
