Russia rocked as Ukrainian drones blast city home to military headquarters

Russia was rocked as Ukrainian drones battered the city that houses its southern military command centre.

Rostov-on-Don plays a key strategic part in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But in the early hours of September 7 it was battered by Ukraine’s latest drone attack.

One person has been reported as injured, three buildings were damaged, and several cars targeted during the attack. It is currently unclear what buildings were hit.

Telegram sources suggest the military building could have been one of those struck by the drone blasts.

Regional governor Vasily Golubev told Telegram that Russia had shot down two Ukrainian drones in Rostov. The city is located around 100km east of the border with Ukraine, reports the Guardian.

Golubev said one of the drones crashed down just outside Rostov. While the other fell “in the centre, in the area of 42 Pushkinskaya Street”.

Rostov-on-Don is the largest city in south Russia. It is the capital of the Rostov region and adjoins eastern Ukraine where the war continues to rage on.

In June the Rostov military HQ was among the buildings that Yevgheny Prigozhin and the Wagner Group sezied control of as they staged a rebellion against the Kremlin. The private military contracters withdrew the following day.
